Joseph Barnett (ca.1861-1897), of Jewish lineage, immigrated from Wales to South Africa in the 1880s, and moved to Johannesburg in 1888. His photographic business was inherited by his brother, David Barnett (1874-1964). The “Barnett collection” has the only remaining copies of the thousands of pictures they took.
